Casey sent me this saying he thought I'd like it. I do, but it also makes me kind of sad.

Indeed, it is sad that he's going to die when he hits the ground. However, the whole setup was his life's work. It had to have taken him most of his life to nail ALL of those trees down. So really, from his perspective, it's the happiest moment in his life. I think I felt more happy than sad at the end because he accomplished a monumental task and also his life's dream. Rock on little Kiwi!

It is the one little tear that kills me. He's like the moth in Archy and Mehitable. His greatest joy - the most beautiful thing he ever does - is his end.

For some weird reason it reminds me of a Salman Rushdie book. Paradise that ends in tragedy but retains its parasiacal feel. Odd. I agree-- it's the tear-- terribly sad.
