Like you, we didn't have a lot of money growing up. My mom would always dress my older sister and I up in her clothes and we went trick-or-treating as "moms". Sometimes we went as dads. The best part? The getting-ready in the bathroom. She would sit us up on the sink and do our make-up. I loved the way the lipstick tasted more than the candy.
In 6th grade my friend Adrienne and I went as lunch ladies. Hairnets, horrible blue shirts. Moles, stirup pants. It was a thing to behold. And we got ALL the guys at my Halloween party because they thought it was hilarious that we dressed up as something unwholesome and gross instead of sexy devils and what not.
My mum made me a felt mountie uniform when I was 5 - and I think that was my absolute favourite.
(if you're only counting kid hallowe'ens - the year I dressed up as Monica Lewinsky, complete with icing sugar goo on my face and dress was great. I picked up goose from Top gun that night).
Found you via Fussy's NaBloPoMo.
Favorite Halloween costume? One year I went as Raggedy Ann, and my mom dressed up as a housewife, curlers in her hair, green facial mudmask on, and carried around a vacuum.
I think I liked my mom's costume better, but that year stands out in my mind. I also won an ENTIRE CAKE during the cakewalk contest.
Gah. I thought I was HAWT stuff.
I almost went as a houewife THIS year, except we had nowhere to go. 6th street in Austin is the place to be, but there were TOO many people. So we went to dinner rented Night Watch, a Russian film, and went to bed. Maybe next year... the most appealing part of that costume in my adulthood is the idea that I can walk around with a drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other and call them props.
When I was about 7 I went as one of the California Raisins. I loved that costume so much that I wanted to wear it all the time but by the next year I had outgrown it. :(
